The Garden City hosted an event to mark the 150th year of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi last weekend.

Apart from audio-visual presentation of the life of India’s Father of the Nation, there was a keynote address by Professor Venkataraman Neelkant of University of Canterbury, as well as some speeches. Indian High Commissioner to New Zealand also presented a memento to the

Christchurch City Councillor Jimmy Chen, who in his short address said, “It is my great pleasure on behalf of the Mayor and the Christchurch City Council to attend this event. It is reminder for us to always keep in mind Gandhiji’s ideals and commitment to passive resistance. He taught us to treat people with respect and dignity, even when they treat us with contempt and hatred. Let us all pledge today to keep the legacy of this great man alive, by being guided by his example, his conduct and his humanity.”
