South Island has witnessed one of the biggest badminton tournaments in recent times with 114 registered players and of that 106 played over 2 days on Saturday, 11th, and Sunday 12th December 2021 with 174 matches played during Telugu Badminton Club of Canterbury’s End of Year Tournament.

The tournament featured all 5 possible categories, Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles. Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles.

On Saturday, 11th December 4 events, MS, WS, WD and XD were played with mains and plates for all the events.

On Sunday, Men’s Doubles was played with 74 players. Based on the performance in initial rounds, the MD teams entered one of the 5 divisions, A to E, with A being the top-level division.

A total of 16 trophies and 42 medals were presented to the winners. Some of the players who won trophies/medals are Anu Ahuja – winner-MS & runner up-MD, Jeremiah Manickam – runner up-MS & MD, Megan Heaney – Winner -WD, & XD, Kate Duffield Winner – WS & WD, Derek Chow – Winner MD-A grade & bronze medal-MS, Justin Hsu Winner-MD-A grade, Rashid Mohammed – Winner XD & B grade-MD.

Eben Anil, aged 10, the youngest player of the participants shared his experience as “It was great to participate in this grand tournament. This tournament has provided me with an opportunity to challenge the senior players wherein I have succeeded a few times. Doubtlessly, I am more confident now to challenge the seniors/adults. This event has provided me with the much-needed confidence. I thank Telugu Badminton Club for providing me with this opportunity.”

One of tournament organizers, Rajeswar Peddisetti said “this tournament has involved players from the wider community. This tournament gave players an opportunity to perform to their potential. Club will be back with more exciting tournaments and events in future”. -TIN Bureau
